Pit Magazine: America
Having already invaded everywhere else, the US has come for the UK's best food magazine
Hello Substack people! It’s been a while. I’ve got a bunch of half-written articles piling up in the ol’ drafts folder, which I have been unable to finish due to writer’s block and apathy,1 and also because I’ve been unexpectedly busy. And what have I been busy with? THIS!
This is issue 16 of Pit – literally (in my opinion) Britain’s best print food magazine, which I have guest edited along with Anna Ansari. I have to thank (blame?) Anna right up front for involving me in this, because it was her idea to approach Pit with this in the first place, following a few disgruntled conversations about having nowhere to publish our stories about American food. But this isn’t just our stories, of course – it’s a truly fascinating array of perspectives and topics from over a dozen talented writers, covering art and activism and medicine and mayonnaise and the oldest food in America as well as some of the newest. It’s also visualised with gorgeously tactile illustrations by Mike Haddad, Robert Billington’s typically striking photography, and Holly Catford’s Milton Glaser-inspired art direction. Overseeing it all was the one and only Helen Graves, and I have to thank Helen, Holly and Rob sincerely for letting Anna and I play in their sandbox. It was a really fun, really educational (and challenging!) experience.
The issue is out in two weeks – October 10th. You can preorder it or subscribe to Pit here, but if you’re not yet convinced, Anna and I will be offering sneak peeks at what’s inside the issue in the days leading up to publication.
Thanks everyone!
If you have remained a paying subscriber during this extended, uh, let’s call it a sabbatical, thank you! I am going to tally up the money from the last few months today and donate them to the Brady campaign against gun violence.
